The team behind Finnieston Distillery Company, producers of Scotland’s first ready-to-drink whisky cocktails, have been operating a quirky pop-up bar – named simply 1083 after its address in Argyle Street – which opened on 8th June for an eight weeks showcase of FDC’s whisky blended cocktails which enjoyed a successful launch in bars and supermarkets last year.
FDC’s David McLauchlan told Glasgowist: “We’ve been really pleased with the response we’ve had to our cocktails from both retailers and the on-trade since we launched last year.
“However, we decided there was a real opportunity to raise awareness of our brand further if we could find the right location for a pop-up bar. And, as a company which is based in Finnieston, it’s great we’ve been able to find an ideal venue in the heart of Glasgow’s coolest area.
“Finnieston really is the destination for people looking for a good night out in Glasgow. Obviously, there’s a huge choice of great bars and restaurants in the area – we see 1083 as the ideal place to pop into for an hour or two to sample our cocktails as part of your night out, listen to some good tunes and then kick on…”
“At this stage, our plan is to open for eight weeks from 2pm to midnight, Thursday to Saturday. But, if it looks like people have a taste for more, we’d certainly consider extending that.”
The new bar’s interior feature a specially commissioned mural by Art Pistol, the West End-based art gallery behind many of the eye-catching murals and street art located around Glasgow.
David continued: “As a young Glasgow-based business, we’re keen to work with others within the city as much as we can. We are good pals with Ali and Suzie at Art Pistol which is why we called them to ask them to work on a design for the interior with a brief to do something totally different to everything else in Glasgow”.
The FDC team are also catering for footy fans with a retro approach to telly watching.
David’s business partner, Neil Paterson explained: “We know some of the more established bars will be showing the World Cup on big screens but we’re taking an old school approach to the tournament so our customers are crowding round a much smaller TV to see the games; primarily to remind us of what it was like in the days when Scotland used to qualify!”
FDC’s cocktails – the Finnieston Fling, Scotch On The Beach, Old Fashioned Green Tea and Shanghai Sour – pay homage to Scotch whisky’s international reputation but are also designed to appeal to people who might not see themselves as traditional whisky drinkers.
