Finnieston’s new market The Dockyard Social prepares to launch

On the 30th November, The Dockyard Social arrives on Haugh Road, just off the main Finnieston strip on Argyle Street. There will be 11 food vendors serving international comfort food, beer and cocktails. It will start as a four day pop-up debut but the plan is to become a permanent fixture.

Nearby SWG3 already have a monthly Hypermarket event based around craft producers and street food. Then, there are plans for a permanent shipping container structure for artists and food vendors as an extension to the Hidden Lane. Finnieston could soon have three functioning markets to add to the established scene-stealing bars and restaurants.

For The Dockyard Social, Kyle Steel, one of the men behind it all, likens the project to Dinerama in London, a
bustling cluster of stalls and bars in trendy Shoreditch, and says he “wants to offer a dynamic addition to the inspiring food scene here in Glasgow, we aim to help reduce unemployment and help those in need as well as having a platform for incredible food traders.”

Kyle has previously organised pop-up food events across the city under the Section 33 banner.

Plans for the new long term venue in a warehouse space include building The Dockyard Social School to encourage local food talent. “Whether you’re a brand-new food business finding your feet, or have fallen on hard times, we want to build a facility to help equip you for the road ahead”.

There will also be a specific employability service for local homeless and unemployed people who can benefit from accessing training, work experience, career support and job matching. These employment programmes will be in partnership with local and national charities.

“We’re doing this to change lives, we’re a local start-up for local start-ups.”

We’ve yet to have a look around the West End location but organisers describe it as an industrial space that will house a wide variety of food concepts – “stalls with bao buns, corn tacos, wood fired pizza etc – and four bars, all changing on a rotational basis.”

Tickets are already selling fast for the first event, which will open from Thursday 30t November to Sunday 3rd December. Tickets for entry to the event are priced at £5pp, which includes an arrival drink from a choice of cocktails, beers and wine. All food dishes are priced at £5.
