Glasgow Distillery Company last night celebrated a big win for its Makar Mulberry Aged Gin, which was named Cask Gin of the Year at the Scottish Gin Awards.
Some of Scotland’s best-known and up-and-coming distilleries came together for the second annual Scottish Gin Awards, to celebrate innovation and continuing excellence in the Scottish Gin market which has flourished in recent years. Entries to this year’s awards increased by 53% since the inaugural event in 2017.
Glasgow Distillery’s Makar beat stiff competition from Eden Mill and Pickering’s to pick up the Gold award in the Cask Gin category, for the Mulberry Aged Gin expression, which is matured in bespoke 50-litre virgin mulberry wood casks over a period of ten weeks. Makar has dominated the Cask Aged category in Scotland for two years running, following last year’s win for Makar Oak Aged Gin.
A panel of experts judged a total of 116 gins in a blind tasting across six categories, deciding that Makar Mulberry Aged Gin, which offers woody aromas and notes of lemon, thyme and vanilla on the palate and a pepper finish, was worthy of the Cask Aged category’s highest accolade.
Makar Mulberry Aged Gin was launched by Glasgow Distillery in 2016, alongside Makar Oak Aged Gin. They were the second and third expressions to join the Makar family, which was first launched with Makar Original Gin in 2014. Glasgow’s first gin, Makar, embraces the characteristics of the city itself, with bold and vibrant flavours. The distinctive juniper led gin derives its name from the ancient Scots word for ‘the maker’ or craftsman. Other gins in the five-strong range include Makar Oak Aged Gin, and the recently launched Makar Cherry Gin.
The Mulberry Aged Gin expression is distinctive, as Glasgow Distillery is one of only a few distilleries known to have experimented with this type of wood. The distillery sources and samples wood from a variety of countries, to ensure any wood used is of the utmost quality, resulting in premium produce.
Mike Hayward, co-founder of The Glasgow Distillery Company, said: “When we started Glasgow Distillery, we set out with the goal of creating fantastic, quality produce that sits apart from the competition. We’re incredibly proud of our Makar Gin range, which combines the finest ingredients with first-class equipment, and a stellar team of distillers.
“Innovation is something we hold in high regard, and Makar Mulberry Aged Gin is the result of pushing boundaries through experimentation with different types of wood. We believe we are the only mulberry aged gin in Scotland, so last night’s win is a fitting tribute to an exciting product; and winning the category two years in a row highlights the creativity of our talented distilling team.”
The award is the latest to be added to Glasgow Distillery’s trophy shelf, after wins at The Gin Masters and San Francisco World Spirits Competition earlier this year for Makar Gin.
