Digital Scotland Leaves Its Mark and Glasgow Leads the Way

17th July 2019 by Jack Dempsey

Scotland has been thriving in the digital age. After all, upgrading society with digital tools has been the government’s ambition for years and, judging by Glasgow boasting a tech workforce of 29% in 2017, it seems to be succeeding.

People, businesses and services have all benefitted from new technologies, like handy software that boosts the visibility of cultural sites and companies alike. Scottish lifestyles have changed with the times, markets and gadgets, to which digital innovations continue to contribute with each passing year.

Eat and Drink with Ease

Launched in July 2018 on the campus of the University of Glasgow, the FanGo app now provides pre-order services across the UK. Fed up with spending hours of their lives in queues, whether at the pub or in a cafe, the software’s developers found a way to make buying easier for consumers and selling more lucrative for retailers.

A subtle but life-changing tool, FanGo allows users to pre-order refreshments prior to arrival, reinforcing how convenient digital technologies can be when created to solve specific, real-life problems. Luckily, efforts to save time and energy do not stop there.

In order to tackle the hectic day-to-day running of a restaurant, coffee house or bar, the Edinburgh-based ePOS Hybrid solution was produced. Designed for businesses and defined by users as a game changer for the food industry, this service provides digitalised versions of everything a manager may need to get organised, from rotas, menus and advertising, to smart tables and deliveries.

Improving customer satisfaction at the same time as business operations, not to mention emotional stability, is a primary goal of modern tech.

Getting Fun in Hand

With the entertainment industry constantly expanding into digital landscapes, including in Scotland, it’s more important than ever for such businesses to make the most of these new territories, and especially their marketing opportunities.

Many of them clearly have, including the casino industry. Any smartphone user can find every brick-and-mortar casino within their vicinity, as well as online providers’ promotions for new players. Users are welcomed with a bonus 5 euros free simply for opening an account with any NetEnt casino, an example of how exclusive offers are becoming increasingly popular across many online gaming platforms.

Glasgow-based game developers have followed suit, extending a 25% discount on Murderous Pursuits, one of their most popular games, to anyone with an account.

Apps and social media aside, websites alone bring the public and fun closer together. The boundless resources available online enable diverse entertainment to be discovered and promoted. VisitScotland can generate 10 times more publicity than organisations ever could in the past by simply posting updates or features listing special events, like bagpipe, ceilidh and other traditional music festivals taking place all over Scotland. It turns out the magic of digital technology also lies in its power to bring old customs back into the spotlight.

The digital and Scottish worlds have merged to both improve the nation and add to the already vast number of technologies enhancing modern societies.

Managing food and entertainment only scratches the surface of the wide scope of digital tools in existence. Every need has a helping virtual hand to depend on. If not, it won’t be long before the right app or website comes to the rescue.
