El Perro Negro win National Burger of the Year ahead of new restaurant opening in Woodlands

21st February 2019 by Paul Trainer

Finnieston’s El Perro Negro, which seats eight people on Argyle Street, defeated competition from Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen and some of the leading burger restaurants in the country to win the National Burger of the Year title last night.

Cooked by director Nick Watkins at the competition, the award-winning Top Dog burger consists of a beef patty, bone marrow and Roquefort butter, double bacon, caramelised onions and black truffle mayonnaise.

Glasgowist is a fan.

The judges, including Xanthe Clay from The Telegraph and Glenn Evans from Las Iguanas, scored Top Dog the highest after 15 rounds of anonymous judging. The event was organised by Casual Dining Magazine.

El Perro Negro was dreamed up by Nick Watkins alongside The Gannet co-owners and chefs Peter McKenna and Ivan Stein. They currently operate from a small space on Argyle Street but plan to open a second restaurant in Woodlands.

We understand this will open in May.

After winning the award, Nick said: “When you come into one of these competitions, it’s very difficult to gauge what the judges want from a burger – sometimes people want the big leaning tower that can get 2,000 likes on Instagram, whereas the Top Dog is more of a sleeper burger – it’s a bit unassuming,”.

“But it packs a massive flavour and I think it’s very unique and is against the grain of what people are doing burger-wise. Our focus is on the produce and the quality of the ingredients that we use. So, for me, this is massive.”

The National Burger Awards 2019 Grand Final was held at Islington Metal Works in London.

Fifteen finalists competed in two rounds that saw them cook a Technical Burger, which was made with ingredients supplied by the event’s sponsors; alongside their own-recipe burger that they submitted at the entry process.

El Perro Negro emerged victorious.
