Elfingrove, the 2019 spectacular that drew over 175,000 event goers, returns this December with a fully outdoor show in the grounds of Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. Work began this week to create Scotland’s largest outdoor ice-skating experience, designed by the team behind ITV’s Dancing on Ice.
itison founder Oli Norman who is leading the Elfingrove project told Glasgowist: “I’m lucky to live in the West End. During the winter if you go down to Kelvingrove, one of our most stunning landmarks, it’s dark and quiet. We are putting in an ice track that’s inspired by a place called Iceworld in Vienna that I visited in 2020, just before the pandemic.”
“My starting point was to create something that fits the building. We’re also bringing in a giant Perspex cover so you will be sheltered from the rain. You then skate through different eras of Christmas music, from old school crooner classic through to pop tunes. Each decade you go through has it’s own light show and the museum building will have it’s own lights.
“I’m hoping if we get it right, we will deliver an experience that would match what you would see at Rockefeller Centre in New York or down in London. One that we’ve never had before in Glasgow.”
There will be a food and drink market as part of Elfingrove, a marshmallow cafe and a festive silent disco.
