First Look: Kelvingrove Cafe reopens after makeover

25th September 2020 by Paul Trainer

Kelvingrove Café reopened its doors today after 190 days. Since closing on March 21st due to the ongoing covid situation, the venue has undergone a spectacular transformation, which has seen the ground level extended with the addition of a new 240 sq ft dining room.

The Argyle Street bar was an ice- cream parlour when it opened in 1896 – a favourite lunch spot for visitors to the then recently finished Kelvingrove Park.

Designed to showcase the building’s original architecture, the new space features Versailles panel tables, pine green Spanish plaster walls and imported Italian terracotta floor tiles – as well as a huge Crittall steel-framed window, a new addition to the venue that floods the space in light.

The bar and brasserie will now open for brunches and coffee, then continuing to late night dinners and drinks.

The bar has revamped its cocktail list with a selection of 14 classic cocktails.

Barry Oattes, owner of Kelvingrove Café, said, “Kelvingrove Café has been a favourite venue in the heart of Finnieston for many years now, so we are delighted to reopen our doors once again. Our focus has always been on providing the very best cocktails in Scotland and now we have the interior to match – spacious, relaxed and ambient.

He added, “Our ambition is to be the best bar in Scotland for cocktails and casual dining, which is why we have invested so heavily in upgrading the venue. We think it’s pretty special and can’t wait to welcome people back.”

In homage to the history of the building, the new menu features a delicious dessert menu curated by Minted (Byres Road) including a traditional Knickerbocker Glory, Peach Melba and Banana Split.

The bar and brasserie returned today following its refurbishment with a renewed focus on cocktails, brunch, sharing food and good times.
