Five Quick Questions: Chess Whiffin from The Wandering Hearts

The Wandering Hearts met almost by chance and were discovered precisely 26 minutes after uploading their first ever demo to SoundCloud, recorded only the second time the band had met to rehearse together. Their shared passion for Americana, vocal harmonies and gin drew them together two years ago, and one afternoon in an empty bar room of the Earl Haig Hall in Crouch End, London, The Wandering Hearts were born. The band signed a major recording deal with Decca Records shortly after.

Last year, they released their first EP Burning Bridges in November, and a series of high profile performances followed. The band’s debut album, Wild Silence, was released on 9th February.

Speaking of the album, The Wandering Hearts say, “The title track ‘Wild Silence’ is about an unspoken, unexplainable bond that draws people together. You don’t know why or how, all you know is that you can’t ignore or fight it. Everyone can relate to this feeling, and as a band we certainly can, so we felt it was a fitting title for the album as a whole. We met almost serendipitously two years ago and since then, we have built a deep, often unspoken connection and understanding of one another”.

To coincide with the release of their album, The Wandering Hearts have announced their first UK headline tour in February and March.

We had Five Quick Questions for band-member Chess Whiffin

1. How did it feel getting signed to Decca after uploading your first song to the internet?

It was complete madness! We uploaded a demo to Soundcloud after our second rehearsal and our manager heard it within half an hour… and it’s been all go since then.

We had a very surreal meeting with Becky Allen, (President of Decca Records) and played her a few songs in her office and that was it, she was on board. We are still pinching ourselves.

2. How quickly did the rest of the album come together?

Pretty quickly really. We wrote like crazy and had 50 songs for the album so it took some time whittling it down to the final 12.

We recorded it – in-between playing festivals last summer – at The Premises in Hackney, east London. We are so happy with it and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

3. What songs are you particularly looking forward to playing live?

We can’t wait to add some new album songs into the set. The song Wild Silence is gonna be quite a crowd pleaser, I think..

4. Are you continuing to write at the moment?

Yeah, we are writing all the time, whenever we have time. Even if we don’t have time to write together, we all write separately so that when we get together, we share all our ideas and have loads to work on!

5. What can we expect from your live show in Glasgow?

We are so excited to get back to Glasgow! We always get such a warm welcome there. We had a great time supporting Amy Macdonald at the Barrowlands – loved the crowd.

Expect some new tunes, more chat and a good fun evening escaping the madness of the world with us. See you there.
