Castlemilk singer/songwriter Gerry Cinnamon has already made a big impression on the Glasgow music scene. As he pushes forward as a performer he has enlisted the support of an enthusiastic local fanbase with stand-out performances at King Tut’s, O2 ABC and the T Break stage at T in the Park.
He’s currently working on an album and will appear on the King Tut’s stage powered by Utilita Energy at TRNSMT festival on Saturday. You can listen to his music here.
We caught up with Gerry to ask Five Quick Questions.
1. What kind of set are you bringing to TRNSMT? Do you approach a festival gig in a different way that you would if you were playing your own gig at King Tut’s?
No idea to be honest. I’ve always got grand ideas but it always end up with some drama and not touching the guitar in the run up to a show and have to blag it. Means there’s more chance of disaster but the adrenaline keeps me on my toes.
2. Speaking of King Tut’s, you’ve sold that out many times at this stage. What did it feel like to play your first show there?
First time I played Tuts on my own was mayhem. A wee turning point for me. Place was bouncing and folk were chanting every word.
I remember thinking at the time “this is getting a wee bit mental” and it’s been going up a level ever since.
3. Have you been writing songs recently? What inspires your music at the moment?
I’m always writing. Folk usually look at me mumbling to myself with a roll and sausage like a loonball but I’m probably just writing a tune that nobody will ever hear.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Vietnamese 60s pop. Sounds like pretentious nonsense but it’s well decent.
4. Many of our readers have told us they are excited to see you at TRNSMT. Are you looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd?
Who doesn’t want to play at the Green? Home crowd will be class. I’m a bit para but come showtime it’ll be business as usual.
5. When you are at home in Glasgow, what are some of your favourite places? Where do you go just to hang out with friends or family?
I’ve been hiding and affording myself few luxuries until I get this album out so God knows what’s happening in Glasgow nowadays. Probably the same thing as usual.
Restaurants aren’t my thing. I can’t sit at a table pretending to be normal, it gives me heavy anxiety. I usually buy a 20 deck and spend most of the time chain-smoking at the door.
I’m either in the Priory on a three day bender or at my mate Tony’s cracking wee club called Badabing in the town. I usually go there. The musics is shocking but the patters above par. They do a mean gabagool as well.
