Anteros are a four-piece band from London, via Barcelona, where singer and lyricist Laura Hayden grew up with her Spanish father and English mother. She’s now fronting a band making smart, sharp guitar pop. They call it “bitter dream pop”. The other members are Joshua Rumble (bass guitar), Jackson Couzens (guitar) and Harry Balazs (drums). The group has hit the road on tour with Two Door Cinema Club, Blaenavon, and White Lies, as well as playing at Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds festivals.
Next stop is a return to TRNSMT. They will be on the King Tut’s stage this Friday in Glasgow Green.
Glasgowist called them for a chat.
What have been some of the highlights from your festival appearances so far?
We’ve got a lot of highlights. The Other Stage at Glastonbury is a hard one to top, just because of the festival’s history.
Are you looking forward to meeting the Glasgow crowd at TRNSMT?
Absolutely. Especially after having so much fun last year. We were a little worried before the set, as it was our first festival in Scotland and there were some clashes with other bands, but the tent was rammed and the crowd knew the songs. We had a blast, and we can’t wait for TRNSMT part two.
Introduce us to “bitter dream pop”, what will your set at TRNSMT sound like?
Indie meets pop with a punch, so get your dancing shoes on. We’ll be playing some new songs too.
What songs in your set get a strong reaction from the crowd?
Our general favourite to play is Cherry Drop, people seem to react really well to that one as well. Breakfast, The Beat and Anteros are always so much fun.
Do you take influences from the music scene in London?
Yes and no. We feel lucky to be based in a big city, full of hard working artists. At the same time, we feel like it is somewhat of a weird time for music.
It is easy to get caught up in a fad, and for songs to wind up sounding the same. We like to retreat and seek inspiration in all sorts. We like to make something that sounds unique and stands on its own – not something that will sound like “year 2018”.
What would be your top tips for enjoying a music festival for people heading along to TRNSMT?
Eat breakfast. Wear sunscreen. Stay hydrated. Ladies, BYOW (bring your own wipes ;)).
What are your recording and touring plans for the rest of the year?
We’ve been hiding in the studio for the first part of this year. We can’t wait to put out new music. We can’t discuss tour plans yet, but we are planning something before the year is over. Glasgow is definitely on the list.
