Competing with the enticing waft of fish ‘n’ chips from Blue Lagoon outside Central Station, the smell of freshly roasted coffee leads you to an alternative alcove for a bite to eat before your train.
Beside the entrance to subterranean restaurant Alston Bar & Beef, Gordon Street Coffee is the only coffee shop in the city centre that roasts its own coffee, fueling up commuters with their own blend.
There are tables upstairs and stools on the ground floor to linger for a chat. You’ll also find breakfast rolls in the morning – mix and match with bacon, sausage, Stornoway black pudding, tattie scone or tomato – with hot and cold sandwiches in the afternoon.
We tried a pastrami, swiss cheese and sauerkraut roll, resisting the urge to grab something from their cake selection (the apple and butterscotch slice looked particularly good).
Their signature sandwich is the Love Meat Tender – a roll packed with hot pulled beef brisket topped with sliced gruyere cheese and slaw for £5.
As well as being very serious about their Glasgow Roast coffee (which combines beans from India, Kenya, Brazil and Guatemala), you’ll also find they serve an excellent pot of tea.
