It was a major breakthrough for the Merchant City when the former Sheriff Court building was finally redeveloped. After decades of inactivity the imposing structure was given a sense of purpose and became a hub for restaurants, shops and venue space.
When the sun shines, the streets around the building become a focal point for the cafe culture that sporadically breaks out in different parts of Glasgow.
Folk grab an outdoor table, put on their best pair of Wayfarer sunglasses, order a glass of wine and strike a pose.
Citation Taverne and Restaurant (Taverne! Check you guys) takes up a significant chunk of the Sheriff Court building and has an attractive outdoor area, one of the best of the bunch around town.
Brunswick Street is a great corner to watch the world go by. The terrace is open from 10am to 10pm.
They’ve an impressive if slightly ostentatious menu, but there’s a place for feeling a bit fancy a lunchtime. Yorkshire man Mark Stocks is a talented chef – he worked under Gary Rhodes at The Green House followed by a spell at two Michelin star restaurant Winteringham Field.
Breakfast is served outdoors from 10am-12pm. For lunch, try the chipotle honey chicken burger with coriander and lime mayonnaise, tomato, baby gem lettuce and pomme frites (£7.95) Fun Fact: It’s okay to call them chips, you’re in Glasgow.
Other tasty options include a fennel and lemon rubben roast pork sandwich with smoked paprika, apple and radish slaw (£7.25).
Inside, they serve an excellent three course pre-theatre menu for £14.95 between 4-7pm daily.
