Mamma Mia, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA returns to the King’s Theatre until Saturday 11 June. Watched by over 65 million people in more than 450 cities and with a highly successful movie adaption and sequel, the show, powered by the music of the Swedish pop supergroup, has become a cultural phenomenon in its own right.
The story follows Sophie Sheridan, who invites three men who may be her dad to her wedding on a small Greek island after reading her mum, Donna’s, diary.
Creator Judy Craymer, when asked why the show struck such a chord with people around the world, said “In a world where everyone’s completely battered by news, it’s nice to feel we’re offering some escapism”.
And it is perfect escapism, with timeless ABBA classics like “Mamma Mia”. “Dancing Queen” and “Super Trouper” worked seamlessly into the plot. The choreography, particularly in stand out number “Voulez Vouz” is exceptional, as are the performances across the cast. Jena Pandya, who plays Sophie, delivers outstanding vocals, as does her stage mother, Sara Poyzer, playing Donna, whose performance of “The Winner Takes It All” is another highlight. Donna’s backup singers, Rosie and Tanya, played by Nicky Swift and Helen Anker, are also hilarious in their roles.
Mamma Mia is the ultimate feel-good show that will have you on your feet and dancing by the end.
