The restaurant is informal but stylised. This is not high concept, however. It’s authentic flavours presented in an accessible way.

Mikaku encourages sharing lots of different small dishes with an excellent drinks offering – we are distracted by colourful cocktails being prepared in the background as we order our food.
Things we like on the menu from our first visit:
Tonkatsu ramen with pork broth, noodles, chashu pork, marinated kikurage mushrooms, spring onions and nori seaweed
A mix of meat and vegetable skewers coated in a light and crispy panko with dips.
Huge sweet honey and sesame chicken wings
Chicken, pork, vegetable or spinach gyoza dumplings

Ramen remains a core part of the menu but the rest of the dishes are more than a sideshow. There’s room now to try different elements of Japanese cuisine. The cooking is impressive, and we’ll be back for those cocktails.
Mikaku is at 25 Queen Street and worthy of your immediate attention.
