Gillian MacMaster is working her way around Glasgow’s food scene, one plate at a time. Providing snapshots of favourite dishes at local restaurants on her Instagram account and documenting dinners on the Plates of Glasgow website.
We asked Gillian to tell us about her favourite people and places in Glasgow.
What do you like best about Glasgow?
I love the people and the booming food scene – both restaurants and street food – it has really taken off and it’s great to see.
Best outdoors space?
For drinking, the Brel beer garden is great. For chilling and walking, I love the Botanic Gardens.
Best restaurant right now?
That is so hard to decide! I’ll say Ox and Finch… but there are so many amazing restaurants in Glasgow right now.
Best pub?
It has to be Sloans for me.
Where would you meet us for a coffee?
I love Papercup on Great Western Road – great coffee and food
Where do you shop for clothes?
Buchanan Street, in the usual shops – H&M etc
Glasgow needs more?
Cool, different bars and more events
Favourite Glasgow building?
I love Kelvingrove Museum, it’s an amazing building
Your Glasgow music?
I still haven’t been to a gig in The Barrowlands, I would love to see a local artist perform there.
Favourite Glasgow neighbourhood?
I love Finnieston, for the restaurants and bars
Your Glasgow hero?
There are so many amazing people in Glasgow, I admire a lot. The chef’s and restaurateurs who have created the most amazing places in the city, the creative minds behind street food events (Dockyard Social/Big Feed etc) and so many more who are making such a positive impact on the city, by being creative. Of course there are amazing people from Glasgow outwith the food industry also.
When you are with friends in Glasgow, what do you like to do?
Eat, we have so many amazing restaurants and cafes, drink and shop!
