Pictures: Saturday at T in the Park

Early afternoon on day two of T in the Park, and TV talent show vibes had come to the King Tut’s Wah Wah Tent. On the stage a music-mad songwriter was singing his heart out. Sitting off to the side on a flight case was a judge and mentor, casting a cool critical eye over the performance (while swigging casually from a tin of Tennent’s).

Stevie McCrorie, winner of the 2015 series of The Voice, had returned to T In The Park. Watching from the wings was his champion on the show, Kaiser Chiefs’ front man Ricky Wilson. The Fife firefighter had a ball last year at his first visit to T in the wake of his TV triumph; he’d had a ball in 2010, too, when he’d played here as a young hopeful.

McCrorie turned in a typically impassioned performance to open the King Tut’s tent and, speaking afterwards, couldn’t contain his joy.

“I really enjoyed it in the King Tut’s tent today. It can be hard going when you’re first on, and the capacity of that tent is massive, but it was a good amount of people there. And I’m proud of that. I’ve persevered, I’ve not given up, and I’m gonna keep going. And I’m just going to keep going.”

It was a sentiment being echoed across the T site all day as festival-goers cheerfully defied the elements and enjoyed a host of top bands at the heights of their powers. Catfish & The Bottlemen, riding high after the release of their chart-topping second album, and returning to Strathallan for a second year, were in roaring form on the Radio 1 Stage. Singer Van McCann is a natural born rock star, leading a band surely destined for headliner status.

Also headed for the top spot, it seems, are Bastille. With comeback single Good Grief already a streaming smash, and their winter UK arena tour a near immediate sell-out, T In The Parkers had the privilege of hearing the band unveiling a bunch of tracks from their upcoming second album Wild World.

As front man Dan Smith enthused, “it’s really nice having shows like T In The Park this summer and to get play to larger crowds on amazing stages like this”. As the Strathallan crowds enthusiastically belted out the chorus to hits like Pompeii, Bastille didn’t sound like a band in need of any practice.

From brand new kings to returning legends: back in the King Tut’s Tent, the stage was a riot of plaid and memories and smiles as Bay City Rollers continued their smash reunion tour. Having wowed the fans with their Christmas 2015 shows, the Seventies Scottish legends were greeted like heroes by an all-ages crowd. Classic singles like Be My Baby, Give A Little Love and I Only Wanna Dance With You Tonight brought a nostalgic rush to Saturday evening.
