Restoration of Banksy murals begins at Argyle Street Arches

The revived Argyle Street Arches are undertaking a five month project with the London-based Fine Art Restoration Co. to restore three Banksy murals that were covered with grey emulsion in 2007.

In 2001, Banksy’s joint exhibition with Jamie Reid, ‘Peace is Tough’ saw the creation of three very special murals on a wall in what once was The Arches; The Mona Lisa surrounded by a picture frame, a gun-toting monkey wearing a tutu, and the words “Every time I hear the word culture, I release the safety on my 9mm” written between them.

Now the team of specialist wall painting conservators will carefully remove the grey paint to reveal the three murals over the next five months.

The restoration launches today at one o’clock during Platform at Argyle St Arches street food market.
