Review: The Rocky Horror Show at the King’s Theatre

2nd February 2022 by Glasgowist

It may have been a dreary wet Monday, but the legendary rock and roll musical Rocky Horror Show blew away any lingering January blues as it roused the crowd at the King’s Theatre as part of the production’s latest world tour.

The cult classic is creeping towards its 50th anniversary and Rocky Horror has its devoted groupies – many of whom arrive dressed as their favourite character – who bring a palpable excitement to the auditorium from the opening number.

Writer Richard OBrien has previously described the show as an “alternative pantomime” which is evident in the playful lines from devoted fans in the crowd who know exactly what to call out and when amidst the risque humour from the stage.

The story begins with a wholesome newly engaged couple Brad (Strictly Come Dancing winner Ore Oduba) and Janet (Haley Flaherty) who stumble across a spooky mansion when their car breaks down. Inside the castle they meet transvestite scientist Frank n Furter (Stephen Webb).

They are invited to his lab to meet his greatest human creation “Rocky” and from then on they are swept into a rollercoaster of wild shenanigans, outrageous behaviour and liberating experiences set to a backdrop of catchy musical numbers.

While the plot may be rather ridiculous at times, it is full of exhilarating performances and that electrifying soundtrack which had the audience leaping to their feet.

Everyone joined in with popular classic Time Warp and were whipped into a frenzy by the time star of the show Frank n Furter made his debut on the stage with Sweet Transvestite.

Oduba and Flaherty gave strong performances as the doe eyed sickly sweet couple. However Webb truly dominated the stage as the audience lapped up every moment of the sassy, innuendo-laden Frank N Furter. Special mention also has to go to the Narrator Philip Franks who had perfect comic timing. Quick witted one liners went down well with the Glaswegian audience – especially the more political jokes.

Overall Rocky Horror is a fast paced and exciting performance. Grab a ticket this week and join in the fun.

The Rocky Horror Show is at The King’s Theatre until 5th February.
