Scott McTominay committed to Scotland via Helensburgh

7th April 2018 by Paul Trainer

Scott McTominay has chosen to commit his international football future to Scotland rather than England. The young Manchester United player was born and bred in Lancashire, but his dad hails from Helensburgh. That gives McTominay the right to decide where to play, and it seems his future is set with Scotland. His grandfather confirmed that the talented player always considered himself more Scottish than English. He has strong family connections on the river Clyde, both through his mother and father. Now the national team are set to benefit from the inclusion of this talented young player.

McTominay has burst into the first squad of Manchester United, still the most popular team in the world, according to Premier League fan base by Unibet. He has been with United since he was just nine years old but found it difficult to break into the club and international level. Since then, McTominay has had 17 first-team appearances for his club and stands out as a bright and strong player, especially since his key involvement in victories over Chelsea and Seville.

His continuing success and growth at the club level have attracted the attention of international managers looking to persuade him to join up. Gareth Southgate could not offer McTominay a guarantee of senior call-up in the run-up to the World Cup, perhaps giving McTominay good reason to go with Scotland, but he has also said that he considers himself more Scottish and is following his heart with the decision to play for the national team.

Scotland manager Alex McLeish travelled to see McTominay at the beginning of March to discuss his options. Apparently, McTominay didn’t need much persuading, as his mind was made up already.

McLeish played McTominay in Scotland’s first friendly against Costa Rica and although the result was disappointing, McLeish did comment on the quality of McTominay’s play.

Unfortunately, McTominay pulled out of Scotland’s friendly match against Hungary due to a minor calf injury. And though Scotland managed a 1-0 victory without him, McLeish has a clear idea of how to bring the player with the Helensburgh connection into a pivotal role.
