The Bingo Babes arrive at Big Feed on Saturday to launch their new monthly residency. The Glasgow drag stars bring their wild bingo show, adding to a night of fun, food and cocktails Bingo Babe Rujazzle – aka Ruairidh D Bowen – said: “The Glaswegian and Scottish drag scenes are absolutely thriving at present and are bigger and more powerful than ever before.
“Drag is going through a huge renaissance, hugely in part due to the rise of TV shows like Ru Paul’s drag race which now has a UK version drag race UK which in 2021 of course was won by Lawrence Chaney who is from Glasgow.
“I think that drag is so culturally significant at present because the world we live in is very scary. It’s about putting on a wig and make-up and going into a fancy world.
“Drag is deeply political. Its roots are about questioning societal norms about gender and who we are as people, how we perceive one and other and what we believe is real and what we believe is fake. Drag is hugely powerful at changing the world, making us question things around us, making us laugh, making us smile, making us cry.”
Drag has become mainstream on the back of shows like Drag Race, and Rujazzle is thrilled mainstream events like Big Feed are offering fun shows.
Ru said: “In 2022 drag is no longer restricted to just LGBTQ+ spaces, no longer just in queer nightclubs and in that setting. Drag is for everyone and we are now in an age where any venue can have drag performers and any audience can respect and enjoy the art of drag.
“At the end of the day drag is about fun both for the audience members and for the performer themselves. I love doing drag because yes, it’s a great means of artistic expression but it’s also fun. It’s about not taking life so seriously and not taking yourself so seriously. I think especially these days we could all do with a bit of that.
“So this weekend at the Big Feed we’re having their first big drag show. There will be performances, there will be games, there will be bingo and prizes and lots of banter. It’s about having fun, enjoying yourself, having a bit of escapism and a good old time with your friends and some fabulous drag queens.”
The Bingo Babes at The Big Feed kicks off at 7pm on Saturday.
Big Feed is open 12-10 on Saturday and 12-7 on Sunday.
