Step inside The Pyramid Yurt Cinema at Anderston

12th December 2019 by Paul Trainer

The Pyramid at Anderson came into community ownership earlier this year and is now owned and run by locals, with plans to renovate and develop the B-listed building. Now, they are hosting the cosy Yurt Cinema for a series of special screenings over the winter.

Cinemor77 has been running the Yurt Cinema at outdoor events and
festivals since 2016. It’s usually packed up at this time for the year, but the cinema experience has found a home in The Pyramid’s sanctuary space.

Thanks to funding from Glasgow Community Planning Partnership
Anderston/City/Yorkhill Area Partnership and Glasgow City Council
there’s some free festive screenings, including Elf, The Polar Express,
It’s A Wonderful Life and other Christmas favourites.

And The Pyramid Yurt Cinema is also taking part in BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season of musicals and special events including talks, a singalong and a quiz night. Ticket prices for these are only £5, with discounts for locals, children, low waged.

Ailsa MacKenzie from The Pyramid said “We’re very excited to have the
Yurt Cinema at The Pyramid with a great programme with some wonderful
movies. We know Christmas can be an expensive time of year, so we
deliberately chose to keep the pricing for tickets and cinema treats as
low as possible. It’s a bit of an experiment this year, which is going
very well so far. We hope lots of people come to enjoy the very special
combination of the cosy Yurt in our historic building.”

The Yurt Cinema holds around 30 people, with top quality HD projection, cinema sound and a big screen.

There are a few chairs for anyone who needs them, but the audience is encouraged to snuggle down on comfy beanbags and cushions to relax. There’s fresh warm popcorn, sweets, hot chocolate and drinks. The Yurt Cinema is also available for private hire and events on request.
