Dreamgirls is in Glasgow as part of its first ever UK tour, fresh off a highly popular run in the West End. Based on the successes of Motown acts such as the Supremes, Dreamgirls follows the music group the ‘Dreamettes’ made up of Effie, Deena and Lorrell, how they climb their way to stardom and all the drama along the way, including relationships and conflict over who will take the lead. In 2006, Dreamgirls was adapted into a film starring Jennifer Hudson as Effie, a role which won her anOscar.
Effie is the heart of the story, played perfectly by alternate Sharlene Hector – an extremely talented, strong-willed singer who must grapple with the fact that she is not as marketable as her fellow singer Deena, as well as her turbulent love for manager Curtis. Her anger accumulates in the shows most famous song, the powerful ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’, which brought the audience to a standing ovation at the end of Act One.
Although Effie is the star, with other showstoppers such as ‘I am Changing’ and ‘One Night Only’, the full cast is brilliant, in particular Brandon Lee Sears who brings endless energy to performer Jimmy Early.With sharp choreography, emotional moments and flawless vocals, Dreamgirls is a classic musical bound to impress fans of the film and theatre production alike.
