Ren McCormack is a boy who loves to dance and move his feet, but after being abandoned by his father, Ren and his mother are forced to move to the strict southern town of Bomont where dancing is forbidden by law.
The rural community is heavily influenced by the strict rules of Rev Moore and are highly suspicious of new faces. As Ren struggles to fit in, he befriends some of the local teenagers and leads them to revolt against the law and bring dancing back to the town. There are plenty of challenges along the way, but it’s not long before Ren has the whole town footloose and fancy free.
Based on the cult 1980s movie that propelled Kevin Bacon to stardom, from start to finish the show has a toe-tapping soundtrack which although perhaps lacking in stand out show stopping tracks is still enjoyable. Holding out for a Hero is a particular highlight with a fabulous vocal from the Rev’s rebellious daughter Ariel played by Lucy Munden. The party classic title track of Footloose of course lit up the audience from the opening riff with fantastic choreography from the full cast. Many of the cast also play musical instruments on stage which is integrated into the choreography of the show and really highlights the multi talented cast.
West end legend Darren Day delivers a strong performance as the stern Reverend who is struggling emotionally with leading his flock and protecting his daughter after a family tragedy.
JLS heartthrob Aston Merrygold also proved his theatre merits with a comedic performance as Rens sidekick Willard Hewitt.
A fun filled entertaining show that will have you dancing in the aisles.
