The paintings and cultural contribution of John Byrne will be celebrated in Glasgow later this month. An exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will display works of art he created from the 1960s onwards.
The retrospective coincides with a musical theatre production inspired by the Paisley upbringing of Bryne, who wrote the stage trilogy The Slab Boys and TV dramas Your Cheatin’ Heart and Tutti Frutti.
Underwood Lane, which will premiere at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow, telling the story of a young skiffle band trying to make it big as they grapple with “style, fierce love rivalry, broken hearts, dodgy dealers, religion, sex and death”.
John Patrick Byrne- A Big Adventure
This is the first retrospective of Scottish artist and writer John Byrne’s illustrious career for more than 20 years. A polymath and cultural icon, John has continued to work, paint and create plays on into his 80’s. This exhibition encapsulates the energy and excitement of John’s work and tells a little of the fascinating life he’s led.
A highlight of the show at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will be a room displaying over 40 self-portraits, the most ever displayed at one time, spanning Byrne’s whole career. A Big Adventure, opening on Friday 27th May, will feature works from Glasgow Life Museums’ collection as well as institutions from across Scotland and private lenders.
