Smash hit Broadway musical Waitress is at the King’s Theatre until 19 April, following a successful run on the the West End.
Based on the 2007 movie of the same name, Waitress follows Jenna (played by Chelsea Halfpenny), a diner worker and expert pie-maker who is unhappy in her relationship with her husband. When she falls pregnant, she finds happiness again with the help of her friends and new doctor.
Singer Sara Bareilles wrote the music and lyrics for the production, which are a perfect mix of catchy, upbeat and emotional ballads. It was also notably the first female-led creative team to bring a musical to Broadway, which can be felt in the way the story handles Jenna’s pregnancy and relationships.
The cast are all incredibly talented, lead by Chelsea Halfpenny as Jenna whose heart-felt performance of the ballad ‘She Used To Be Mine’ is a highlight. Her chemistry with Matt Willis , of Busted fame, who plays Jenna’s Doctor, Dr Pomatter, leads to both hilarious moments and intense emotion as their story unfolds.
Jenna’s waitress friends, Becky and Dawn, add the perfect amount of comedy in between the emotion of Jenna’s scenes, particularly during Dawn’s admirer, Ogie’s, song “Never Ever Getting Rid Of Me”.
Waitress is a must-see musical that will have you crying, laughing and thinking of it long after you leave.
