Teenage Fanclub have announced a UK and Ireland tour for later this year. It’s been a good week for 90s Scottish bands closely associated with the Glasgow music scene. First Belle and Sebastian were confirmed for three shows at the West End Festival, now the alt-rock superstars Teenage Fanclub have revealed plans for a 10th album release in September followed by an extensive tour that culminates in a gig at the inimitable Barrowland Ballroom.
News reaches us that the band have been recording in studios in Provence, Glasgow and Hamburg: “They’ve been busy honing a bunch of new recordings to their collective satisfaction. Now happy with all that, they’re coming back out to play again.”
Teenage Fanclub are from Bellshill but they emerged from the midst of Glasgow’s jangling guitar wielding indie set and became a hugely influential and acclaimed part of the musical firmament.
They gaining almost mythical status with fans during a surge of creativity which began with their LP Bandwagonesque in 1991 and probably peaked with their album Grand Prix – released on Creation Records in the summer of 1995.
Forever associated with that period in rock n roll, Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley, Gerard Love, Francis MacDonald have continued to record albums and toured sporadically, retaining a special place in music fans’ affections.
Fun Fact: It’s obligatory in articles about Teenage Fanclub to mention that Kurt Cobain once described them as the best band in the world. It is optional to state that Liam Gallagher once described them as the second best band in the world.
Their tour begins with a show at Inverness Ironworks on 15th November and concludes with what should be a dynamite set at Barrowlands on 3rd December. Full dates are below, you can find out more about the tour here.
