If the last year has proven anything, it’s that Scotland gives the world peak internet. And because the country brought the funny to Twitter in 2017, Tennent’s has served up the first official countdown of our best banter – with number one literally going for gold.
The top tweet champion has now become the first non-celebrity to receive Tennent’s Golden Can, entering the lager’s hall of fame alongside a host of Scottish icons, including Irvine Welsh, Karen Gillan and Biffy Clyro.
Tennent’s worked with a panel of funny-men to create the hilarious list; @ChrisMcQueer, @Goudie15, Scottish Banter and Scottish Patter trawled social media for our best bits, which include Basshunter for PM and literally cutting a boot.
With his Flintstone funny, Nick Davis (@Wheresmajaiket) – a surveyor from Kilmarnock – picked up Tennent’s award for the most deserving icons of Scottish culture:
“My teachers always said I’d never amount to anything, but thanks to Twitter, some dodgy patter and Tennent’s Lager I’ve almost proved them wrong. I’m really chuffed and surprised to be in the Golden Can Hall of Fame.
“With the success of my tweet I’ll be doing a Victory tour around Kilmarnock with my award this weekend. I’d like to thank my mates and familt for supporting me along the way to becoming the first punter with a Golden Can. Cheers!”
Alan McGarrie, Head of UK Brand Marketing Services at Tennent’s Caledonian Breweries, said: “There’s always that one mate that dishes out patter like no-one else – and perfect pelters are a real art.
“With our final Golden Can award of the year we wanted to recognise that, shining a light on those who’ve really made us laugh this year.”
