If you are a certain age, you’ll remember All Saints for their arrival in a blizzard of cargo pants and tight harmonies with breakthrough single Never Ever. Others will associate them most with Pure Shores, from the soundtrack to Danny Boyle’s much-maligned film adaptation of The Beach (we think it’s under-rated). Then there’s the sassy – yes, we said sassy – first single I Know Where It’s At. There’s also that questionable cover of Under the Bridge.
Due to a quirk of timing, All Saints were lumped into a girl band movement with the Spice Girls but shared very few characteristics with that particular pop package. They share more of a genre with the first iteration of the Sugababes, displaying hallmarks of musical credibility beneath the pop bombast.
All Saints launched in 1997 and peaked in 2000, before going “on a break” in 2001.
Melanie Blatt, Shaznay Lewis, Nicole Appleton and Natalie Appleton returned with a new album earlier this year, which was well received. They are currently on a comeback tour and tonight they arrive in Glasgow for a set at the O2 Academy. Expect all the nostalgia feels, and some new tracks that are worthy of your attention.
