Tonight: An Evening with Chris Brookmyre

21st January 2016 by Paul Trainer

Chris Brookmyre, the Barrhead born successful proponent of Tartan Noir is on familiar territory tonight. Back in Glasgow, it’s his third city in three days as the successful author introduces his latest book, Black Widow – he was in Inverness last night and Edinburgh the previous night.

An audience will have a chance to gain an insight into Brookmyre’s work at a talk in Sloans Ballroom, which will be followed by a signing and an opportunity to pick up a copy. There will be a similar event at Primavera Bistro, Newton Mearns, on 2nd February.

As you may know, Chris (didn’t he used to go by Christopher? Less formal these days?) Brookmyre’s novels combine dark humour, Scottish locations, social commentary and often outlandish action-based crime capers alongside memorable characters.

You’ll probably spot a few of his books on your friends’ bookshelves, if you have the type of friends who own bookshelves.

Some of his best-selling and most enjoyable novels feature the character Jack Parlabane, an anti-authoritarian journalist. Brookmyre’s work has won numerous awards and his first novel, Quite Ugly One Morning, was adapted for television in 2003.

Parlabane returns in the novel Black Widow, here’s what it’s all about:

There is no perfect marriage. There is no perfect murder. Diana Jager is clever, strong and successful, a skilled surgeon and fierce campaigner via her blog about sexism. Yet it takes only hours for her life to crumble when her personal details are released on the internet as revenge for her writing. Then she meets Peter. He’s kind, generous, and knows nothing about her past: the second chance she’s been waiting for. Within six months, they are married. Within six more, Peter is dead in a road accident, a nightmare end to their fairytale romance. But Peter’s sister Lucy doesn’t believe in fairytales, and tasks maverick reporter Jack Parlabane with discovering the dark truth behind the woman the media is calling Black Widow…

You can buy a copy of Black Widow by Chris Brookmyre here, it’s also available as an audiobook.
