The late 90s was crowded with indie frontmen. Liam Gallagher garnered most of the headlines, Damon Albarn enjoyed critical acclaim, but it was Richard Ashcroft’s effortless cool and Jarvis Cocker’s enigmatic personality that made them more interesting propositions.
While Cocker’s band Pulp transitioned out of the Britpop era and continued to tour, Ashcroft’s The Verve dissolved and left the talented lead singer prowling the outskirts of pop music as a solo performer.
His fourth studio album These People is released this Friday and coincides with Ashcroft making a serious play to return to the musical mainstream.
He performed four songs from the new album last night in The Roundhouse in London as part of a dynamic 1 hour and 50 minutes set, a gig that kicked off a busy summer which includes a live tour and festival appearances.
Richard Ashcroft will return to the stage at 02 Academy Glasgow on 27th May. There will be another opportunity to see him live when he supports fellow music grandee Noel Gallagher at Bellahouston Park on 26th August.
