What Claire Baked: Halloween Mini Green Monsters

20th October 2016 by What Claire Baked

These little green monsters designed by What Claire Baked are perfect for big kids or little kids this Halloween. Claire’s simplified the mix to make these quick and easy to bake for experienced or novice bakers and has provided some hints and tips to decorate them, but of course feel free to design your little monsters however you like.

Great for Halloween parties, or sharing with friends on 31st October.

Little Green Monsters

Ingredients (approximately 10 monsters)

1 packet sponge mix (make up according to pack instructions)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Icing sugar made into a thin paste with water

1 pack green candy melts

Orange and brown Reeses Pieces for eyes

1 white Choco Writer

Lollipop Sticks (optional)

Method

1. Preheat the oven to the temperature suggested on the sponge mix. Note – you can make these using a basic sponge mix, but for cost and speed if you are making these with kids, I’ve suggested a pre-mix pack.

2. Make up your sponge, add the vanilla extract if required and pour into a lined baking tin. Bake for 12-15 minutes until cooked and golden. Once cooked, transfer to a wire rack to cool.

3. Once cool, break up the sponge into a bowl until it looks like breadcrumbs. Mix up icing sugar in a cup, with water until a paste is formed and slowly add the icing sugar into the cake crumbs. Stir to bring the mix together, until it resembles a firm dough.

4. Break equal sized pieces off the mix and roll into a ball. Repeat with the remaining mix until you have 10 equally sized pieces. Transfer to the fridge and chill for around 1 hour to firm up the mixture.

5. For the coating, melt down green candy melts according to pack instructions – melt down a few to start, until you get the hang of using them. Once melted, roll each ball in the green mix to coat and return to a baking tray lined with baking parchment.

6. Once all balls are covered, return to the fridge and allow to set.

7. Use the choco writer on the back of each of the Reeses Pieces, to attach the “eyes” to your monster. Then, paint two white dots on each of the eyes using the choco writer. Paint on a chocolate mouth using a zig zag shape and decorate with chocolate shapes as desired.

8. Insert a lolly stick into the base of each and serve at your Halloween party!
