Why Glasgow Is the Perfect City Break Destination

23rd February 2024 by Paul Trainer

Nestled in the heart of Scotland, Glasgow is a dynamic city brimming with culture, history and an unmistakable sense of charm — everything you need in a city break destination. In fact, we’d go so far as to say Glasgow is the ultimate destination for a city break no matter where you are in the UK; our fair city can be reached easily on direct trains from London, Leeds, Manchester and more.

But, it’s not just the transport connections that make the “world city of friendship” such a perfect place for a short trip. In fact, you’ll find that one holiday here simply isn’t enough. Read on for everything you need to know about taking a weekend away in Glasgow.

A Luxe Place to Rest Your Head

There’s no shortage of accommodations in Glasgow to suit all budgets, but if you really want to push the boat out we suggest seeking one of the finer hotels in the city. Glasgow boasts an array of upscale hotels that promise a pampering experience like no other. The iconic Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel, housed in a grand Georgian townhouse, offers plush rooms, a spa, and award-winning dining.

Alternatively, Malmaison Glasgow, set in a former Greek Orthodox church on West George Street, never fails to impress with its modern elegance. Check into one of its lavish suites for an unforgettable trip.

Get Your Cultural Fix

If it’s art and culture you’re after, Glasgow is the city for you. Simply walking its streets will take you on a trip through the centuries: look for grandiose art nouveau flourishes and imposing Victorian architecture. Elsewhere, you’ll find reminders of the city’s past when it played a key role during 18th century trading and shipbuilding.

Edinburgh may have its Fringe, but cultural enrichment is a year-round activity in this city. Home to Scottish Ballet, the National Theatre of Scotland, Scottish Opera, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and tons more acclaimed galleries and gardens, you’ll have a hard time seeing everything the city has to offer in just a few days.

Culinary Indulgence

Glasgow’s culinary scene is a melting pot of flavours and influences, showcasing the best of Scottish produce alongside international fare. For a truly indulgent dining experience, look no further than Cail Bruich, a Michelin-starred restaurant in the heart of the West End, which offers innovative tasting menus carefully crafted to showcase each season’s finest ingredients.

For something a little more low key and easier on the pursestrings, Ox and Finch, situated just off Argyle Street, is worth a visit. Offering a contemporary, creative take on tapas — blood orange and fennel panzanella, anyone? — the restaurant is known locally for its “cooked to perfection” dishes and accommodating staff.

When the Night Falls

Don’t be fooled into thinking Glasgow’s cultural offering slows down after dark! The city truly comes alive at night, offering a plethora of entertainment options for every taste, from casino gaming to unforgettable gigs.

Now, we’re not claiming that Glasgow can square up to a city like Las Vegas when it comes to casino gaming, but you’ll find there are several world-class casinos to enjoy here, including the Grosvenor Casino Riverboat on the banks of the River Clyde. Here’s a gaming venue that’s truly unique but, don’t worry, you’ll still find all the games you would expect to, including an array of electronic slot machines. And if you’re a newbie to casino gaming, then the advice you can find at iGaming platforms such as the ins and outs of RTP slots is just as relevant in a brick-and-mortar casino as it is in a virtual one. This venue also has two bars and a highly-rated restaurant on site.

When it comes to more diverse nightlife, the city’s reputation really does precede itself. From chic cocktail bars to legendary live music venues, there’s no shortage of places to see and be seen. The regenerated Merchant City district is always a hub of activity at night, with trendy bars and slick clubs lining its cobblestone streets. For a more bohemian vibe, head to the West End for quirky pubs hosting intimate gigs.

As for live music, where else could you possibly want to be than at the Barrowland Ballroom? Time Out’s ‘best venue in the UK for 2023’, the Barrowland has been in existence for 100 years and is a staple in pop culture, hosting the likes of David Bowie, Metallica, Primal Scream and Simple Minds.
